YS Falls

A seven-tiered waterfall cascading into natural swimming pools on a historic estate near the Black River, with ziplines, river tubing, and a scenic jitney ride through the farm.

About This Place

YS Falls is one of Jamaica's most spectacular natural attractions — a seven-tiered waterfall cascading into natural pools, located on a historic private estate near the Black River in St. Elizabeth. Opened to the public in 1992, the site has been carefully managed as an eco-tourism destination to protect its natural beauty while welcoming visitors.

The estate's name has two origin stories: one holds that the initials come from the property's first two owners, John Yates and Colonel Richard Scott, whose combined surnames formed "YS Estate." The other theory traces the name to the Gaelic word "wyess," meaning "winding." The estate dates back to the 17th century, when it grew sugar cane and logwood for export to Europe. In 1887, John Browne — great grand uncle of the current owners — purchased the property in London, drawn by the river running through it, before he had even set eyes on it.

The experience begins with a tractor and jitney ride through the working farm, a roughly 10-minute journey past grazing cattle and lush pastures. At the falls, visitors can swim in the natural pools fed by underground and above-ground springs, swing into the water on the Tarzan rope swings, or try river tubing. For the adventurous, the canopy zipline tour glides from the top of the falls to its base at about 40 feet high, with experienced guides.

The grounds include the YS Chill and Grill restaurant and bar, changing rooms and restrooms, a gift shop with local crafts and souvenirs, and a playground for children. A separate natural pool is available for younger children and non-swimmers.
