The Spirit of the Soil

Appleton Estate

Jamaica's oldest and most famous rum distillery, offering tours through centuries of rum-making heritage in the Nassau Valley.

About This Place

Appleton Estate stands as a testament to over 265 years of Jamaican rum-making excellence. Nestled in the Nassau Valley of St. Elizabeth, surrounded by limestone hills that create the perfect microclimate, this legendary estate has been producing world-renowned rum since 1749.

The estate spans 11,000 acres of sugar cane fields, fed by the waters of the Black River and blessed with mineral-rich soil that gives Appleton rum its distinctive character. The terroir here is as important to rum as it is to fine wine.

The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience takes visitors on a journey through the complete rum-making process - from the sugar cane fields to the fermentation house, past the copper pot stills, and into the aging warehouses where barrels of rum mature in the tropical heat.

Named after Joy Spence, the first female Master Blender in the spirits industry who has shaped Appleton's award-winning expressions for over four decades, the tour culminates in a tasting session where visitors can sample the range of premium aged rums.
