The Untamed South
Jamaica's longest navigable river, home to crocodiles and exotic birds in pristine mangrove wetlands on an unforgettable safari experience.
The Black River is Jamaica's longest navigable river, winding through the Great Morass - the largest wetland in the island. A boat safari up this mysterious waterway offers one of the most unique wildlife experiences in the Caribbean.
The river gets its name from the dark appearance of its waters, caused by the peat deposits on the riverbed and the tannins from decomposing vegetation. Despite its appearance, the water is clean and supports an incredible ecosystem.
The Black River Safari takes visitors through mangrove forests that serve as a sanctuary for the American crocodile. These prehistoric creatures can be seen basking on riverbanks or gliding silently through the water. The knowledgeable boat captains know where to find them and share fascinating facts about their behavior.
Beyond crocodiles, the wetlands are home to over 100 species of birds, including herons, egrets, and the endangered West Indian whistling duck. The mangrove ecosystem is also a vital nursery for many fish species that support Jamaica's fishing industry.
The town of Black River itself has beautiful Georgian architecture and was once one of Jamaica's most prosperous ports.
