The Living Tunnel
A two-mile stretch of road completely canopied by towering bamboo, creating one of the Caribbean's most iconic and photographed drives.
Bamboo Avenue is a two-and-a-half-mile stretch of road between Middle Quarters and Lacovia, completely arched over by giant bamboo that has grown together to form a living tunnel. This natural cathedral of green has become one of Jamaica's most iconic and photographed landmarks.
The bamboo was originally planted in the 17th century by landowners to provide shade for travelers and to prevent soil erosion along the roadway. Over the centuries, the bamboo has grown to create this magnificent canopy, with stalks reaching up to 60 feet high before arching gracefully over the road.
Driving through Bamboo Avenue is a magical experience - the light filters through the dense canopy creating dappled patterns on the road, and the temperature drops noticeably as you enter the cool green tunnel. It's a moment of natural air conditioning in the Jamaican heat.
The avenue is particularly beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight streams through the bamboo at low angles, creating god rays through the cathedral-like space.
