Heritage stories from the heart of Accompong
A Maroon elder and storyteller, Miss Ivy leads heritage walks through Accompong, sharing centuries of oral history, traditional herbal medicine knowledge, and Maroon drumming traditions passed down through generations.
Miss Ivy is a Maroon elder who has lived in Accompong her entire life. As a recognized heritage guide for the community, she leads walking tours that cover Kindah Tree, the peace cave where Cudjoe signed the 1739 treaty, and the surrounding Cockpit Country trails used by Maroon warriors.
Her tours are as much oral history as they are walks. Miss Ivy shares the stories she learned from her grandmother — tales of resistance, strategy, and survival — alongside working knowledge of bush medicine, traditional cooking, and drumming. Many visitors describe her tours as the most moving cultural experience of their trip.
She welcomes respectful visitors year-round, but tours during the annual Accompong Maroon Festival on January 6th are particularly special — you'll witness ceremonies, music, and food that connect directly to West African heritage. Booking ahead by phone is essential as she often guides by appointment only.
